Psychiatric Service Dogs
Psychiatric service dogs are trained to perform tasks for individuals who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder or disability. PSD should not be confused with emotional support animals. Emotional support animals are not limited to just dogs . Emotional support animals can provide companionship, relieve loneliness, and help with depression, anxiety, and certain phobias, HOWEVER they do not have special training to perform tasks that assist people with disabilities. To decide if a psychiatric service dog is right for you, an individual must have a mental disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities. The ADA defines a mental disability as any mental or psychological disorder such as emotional or mental illness and specific learning disabilities. Examples of those who may qualify: Clinical depression Anxiety disorders, Phobias, Post-traumatic stress disorder, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders, Bipolar disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD),Autism.

Medical Detection
Using a dog’s amazing senses they can be trained to identify changes to their handler prior to an emergency and alert the person to take preventative action. Some examples of conditions are: diabetes, cardiac related disease, various allergies, various other endocrine disorders and seizures.

Medical Support & Mobility Assistance
Some individuals need help with balance or help navigating other body movements. Mobility issues can be more complex too. Because mobility support can mean all kinds of things, here are some examples of how a service dog can help:
pick up dropped items, retrieve items that are otherwise out of reach for their handler, opening and closing doors, drawers, appliances, turning on/off switches or lights, some individuals need help publicly like pushing buttons on an elevator, help navigating various terrain, and helping those with wheelchairs, prosthetics and other devices.
